Mountains are some of the most magical and spiritual places
on earth and what can be more mystical than the Himalayas. However, preserving these mountain ecosystems in their pristine beauty is a duty which everyone must diligently pursue.
One of the most significant factors that affect the environmental integrity of these mountain ecosystems is improper waste management. How can we manage our waste to ensure that
our immediate environments do not get adversely affected?
The concept of the 3R’s is well known and accepted worldwide
as a practical solution.
Reduce – The first step is to reduce the amount of waste that we generate. Become religiously frugal in what waste you produce.
It is in our very homes that we can resolve majority of the problem.
Reuse – Try and reuse as much as possible, whether it is for the same purpose or for an entirely new function.
Recycle – With technology developing at a rapid pace it is surprising as to what all we can recycle now. Try and recycle as much as possible to reduce the pressure on our limited natural resources. However, this is only possible if you manage and segregate your waste properly at your homes. Take for e.g, waste material (primarily crushed mineral water bottles) being used in insulating solar passive homes in Spiti or waste tetra packs that are being recycled to make tissue paper.
Educate yourself about how we can start at our very homes to dispose off our waste properly.
Ecosphere has already started to reduce its waste and is developing workable solutions to assist the local community
as well as travelers to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste.
